Humanin is a 24-amino-acid peptide encoded by a short open reading frame within the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene. It was discovered in 2001 by Hashimoto and colleagues and was the first of the mitochondrial-derived peptides, a family that now also includes MOTS-c.

Receptors and Binding Partners

Laboratory studies report that humanin interacts with a trimeric receptor complex (CNTFR/WSX-1/gp130), with formyl-peptide receptor-like 1 (FPRL1), and intracellularly with IGFBP-3 and the pro-apoptotic protein Bax.

Purity Testing and Storage

Every lot of Humanin supplied by Cleared Peptides is tested by an independent laboratory for identity and purity (or composition, for multi-component preparations), and the lot Certificate of Analysis is published on our COA page. Store lyophilized Humanin at −20 °C, sealed, dry and protected from light. Allow the vial to reach room temperature before opening and minimize freeze–thaw cycles. Handle according to your institution’s chemical-hygiene procedures.
