5-Amino-1MQ (5-amino-1-methylquinolinium) is a small, membrane-permeable quinolinium compound characterized as a selective inhibitor of nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT), an enzyme that methylates nicotinamide using S-adenosylmethionine.

5-Amino-1MQ Structure and Identifiers

Name 5-Amino-1MQ
Synonyms 5-Amino-1-methylquinolinium
CAS number 42464-96-0
PubChem CID 66522933
Molecular formula C10H11N2+ (salt form per COA)
Molecular weight ≈159.2 g/mol (cation)
Type Small molecule (not a peptide)
Form Powder

Why NNMT Matters in Research

NNMT converts nicotinamide to 1-methylnicotinamide, diverting it from the NAD+ salvage pathway and consuming methyl groups. Inhibiting NNMT in cell models is therefore used to study NAD+ levels and methyl-donor balance — often alongside NAD+.
